Urethane Driver: How it Impacts Your Production and Maintenance

The drive end of your timing [feed] screw contains a wear component. In Morrison's case, this is our square driver. No matter the manufacturer of your screw, there will come a time where this will need to be replaced by your maintenance team.

However, it is visually difficult to know when this needs to be replaced until it does. This is why our latest product update is the launch of our Urethane Square Driver. 

First things first, what is a square driver and what does it do?

The driver is the mechanism that connects your machine to the timing screw drive unit.  Unique to Morrison timing screws is our square driver. We have found, adapting to a square driver allows four sides of the square to evenly displace the rotational driving force for a more robust connection that reduces wear on the components over time. The rounded corner of the square drive also allows for five degrees of misalignment without damaging the drive components.

So why was this wear component updated to include a urethane coating?

Introducing our newest square driver, now coated in urethane, provides four key impacts to your line. It is a great retrofit to any timing screw on your line or new timing screw orders moving forward. Learn why this should be upgraded below.


1. BETTER CONNECTION - ELIMINATE METAL ON METAL

The urethane driver eliminates a         metal-on-metal drive connection, eliminating the need for greasing the male or female ends of the screw connection. The driver’s design allows for visual inspection, so it will be clear to your maintenance team when it needs to be replaced. As the urethane wears the driver will start to round out and change shape. Once the metal is exposed, your team will know it’s ready for replacement, helping stay on top of maintenance and minimizing potential downtime. 

2. INCREASED PRECISION

It's only natural that over time operational stress can wither away at the precision and accuracy of a machine. You may not be able to eliminate this problem, as all machines have a lifetime, but you can help extend the periods of precision between maintenance. For example, the urethane driver press fits into Morrison timing screws providing unmatched precision. This driver-to-screw connection allows for higher precision movement, in even the most aggressive applications. While press fitting into the screw, this updated driver is easier on your machine causing less wear, helping prolong the precision of your machine. 

3. HELPS REDUCE CHATTER

During these labor shortages we know your machines are working overtime. That's why the urethane jacket provides extra cushioning between the drive and the timing screw, causing less wear and tear on your machine, helping reduce maintenance costs, and saving lost production time.

4. REDUCES BACKLASH

Backlash can create an issue in positioning when an axis changes direction. With this new improvement, your backlash is highly reduced leaving your machine functioning at a higher level.
